SHOWER TRAINING- PA Set Up

1. Gather the following supplies and set up on counter:

  • Get the clear basket from the white shelf in bedroom (pictured above) 
  • The basket is to carry things to the bathroom. To save trips. 
  • Get from the hospital table at the foot of the bed: 
    • Bottle of Colloidal silver, tube of A&D and bag of q-tips 
    • Put all in the basket including razor and tissue 
  • Cup with trach solution, only fill high enough to wet tip of q-tip 
  • Ted hose, clothes, brief, 2 blue washcloths
  • Ask Don which shirt he would like to wear 
  • Pants rule (on bedroom closet shelf): 
    • If no pants get from the pants basket to match shirt 
    • If only one pair, show pants to Don and ask Don if he wore it yesterday 
    • If two get the top pants on the shelf 
  • Condom and alkare (sticky wipes)
  • Alcohol wipe
  • Collar and inner canullar (only Sun & Weds)
  • Step stool, put under sink 
  • Cut diaper in 3 places in front
  • Gauze pads, press & seal, 7 q-tips 
  • Toothbrush, cup, spit bowl, pink sponge with mouthwash, q-tip with tube of tooth gel 
    • Wet toothbrush and put toothpaste on
  • Tape and deodorant 
  • Towels from behind door 
  • 2 double paper towels and shampoo
  • Put soap on my washcloth and luffa 

2. When set up in bathroom:

  • Empty catheter bag 
  • Set up Little Bertha

  • Help with transfer to commode 
  • Help move Don into bathroom 

3. During shower: See PA Shower Training (for more details) 

  • Press & Seal chair and then Don’s Left arm 
  • Wash hair and face 
  • Rinse 2x 
  • Wash Back 
  • Grab both brown towels off drying rack, place one behind Don’s back 
  • Dry my hair, turn chair 
  • Dry neck and face (especially mustache) 
  • Wipe mouth 
  • Clean nose and shave 
  • Clean ears 

4. Post-shower

  • Dirty clothes and rags to laundry 
  • Straighten sheets, fix chux and turn off bed 
  • Move Bertha to living room and plug in 
  • Clean suction machine 
  • The trash schedule: 
    • Sunday - replace plastic bag in the bathroom 
    • Wednesday - replace both plastic bags in the bedroom 
    • Friday - replace plastic bag in the living-room 
  • Gather 5 double paper towels 
  • Collar and inner canullar schedule: 
    • Sunday - replace both 
    • Wednesday - replace both 
    • Friday - none, only tighten collar 
  • Help brush teeth (apply tooth gel to q-tip last minute) 
  • Help move Don out to living room 
  • Help with vent change 
  • Ask Don if Little Bertha circuit needs new humidifier (middle drawer)
  • Always check lithium battery levels on shower days

DRT  I would like to start by saying that I’m glad that I made the decision to continue to fight this horrible disease by getting a trach. A few of my friends (PALS-People with ALS) when confronted with the inability to breathe, decide to hang it up. I choose to LIVE! WATER MANAGEMENT Every time you come, do water management on both vent tube at 11 AM and 7 PM. The key points are: Empty both tubes of excess water. Always empty water AWAY from me, NOT into me. Remove clear tube from PEEP valve and drain water into wash cloth. NEVER allow the PEEP valve to get wet.  Separate the white tube from the peep valve. Don’t twist the peep valve. Hold the white tube in two places, up by my belly and down by the peep  valve.  Pull hard on the white tube while holding the other end that will empty the water out. Do it twice.  The blue tube is different. Tap the blue tube starting up at my chest and continue down to the bottom. Never pull the blue tube because of the wires.  Carefully d

OVERNIGHT TRAINING- Vest

DRT  How to put the vest on in the morning:  I prefer that you don't lower the vent arm.  Put my feet on the box.  Pull the vest machine out of the closet.  Take the finger foam and vest out. Don't put them on yet.  Take off my peg tube, metal clip and rice pad.   Important , put the paper towel on my right shoulder on the roll pillow so it doesn't get lost behind my back.  Put my feet on box because when you pull vest down, I always shimmy down.  Important, the next few steps can be done on either side of the bed depending on how strong your upper arms - if you can pull down the vest.  Put the vest behind my neck. Do not lift my head!  Pickup my right hand first to put white tubes under my arm pit. Do the same with my left hand from the window side of bed (if you choose to do all from that side of the bed).   Grab the bottom of both sides of the vest. Read Before 1st Training- How to Transfer and Wheelchair Comfort

DRT   How to Transfer  WHEELCHAIR Hints: Wheelchair should have 4” ROHO cushion. Plus a blue or green chux to protect ROHO if I leak. I have weak stomach muscles, so be sure my arms are always on the arm rests to prevent me from falling forward. It is very painful on my PEG tube when I’m leaning forward unsupported. It's very important to turn the front WC wheels before transfer so you can move the WC with ease.  BED to WHEELCHAIR or SHOWER CHAIR - for my CNA Use the PIVOT DISK for transfer to and from bed. Always transfer me with my shoes or slippers on. With shoe straps behind my ankles. That way I won’t slip off the disk.  If I am shaking help me to put my heels on the disk, that way I am not on the balls of my feet. Push your hands on my knees to make it stop. When you lift me, don’t give me a bear hug, it hurts my PEG tube. Lift me using my rib cage with your arms on my back or under my armpits.
