OVERNIGHT TRAINING Study-Guide

Overnight Study Guide
·        CNA shift starts at 8 or 8:30 pm
·        When CNA is ready for transfer:
o       Unplug Big Bertha (always hit the vent reset button twice)
o       Assist with the nighttime transfer and follow into bedroom and plug the power cord in the power strip at the head of the bed
·        Once Don is in his room, turn off fan and main overhead light in living room
o       Turn on light by the front door or desk to save electricity
o       Turn off fish tank light
·        Assist with bed transfer:
o       Pull up diaper until snug
o       Make sure to pull down left side of diaper extra far at night during transfer from SC to bed
o       When Don is seated in bed, take off his shoes, and quickly swing his legs onto the mattress by gripping his ankles (NOT HIS KNEES)
o       Put both feet on box
o       Turn on bed IMMEDIATELY!
o       Make sure his toes and fingers don’t scrunch up while the bed is inflating
o       Fix chux if necessary
·        Assist CNA with lifting Don up in bed
o       Transfer Don further up the bed by grabbing the mattress pad and putting your knee on the middle of the mattress
o       First lift the chux and then move Don’s butt up towards the head of the bed
·        Get purple gloves and massage hands and arms
·        Get nose sucky machine, suction nose
·        Get from cart the two qtips and sucky machine cap only with you to the bathroom
·        Clean the cap of the sucky machine and wet one end of both qtips
·        Roto rotor my nose with qtips
·        Tissue nose
·        Get a wash cloth as hot as you can stand to wash my face and ears
·        Do hand and arm rom
·        Put all bed pillows on bed
·        When CNA calls for medicine and snack
o       Leave snack and meds on bedroom cart
o       If you make the snack because no food is left over, don’t add fiber, the CNA will add it right before she feeds Don
·        At this point, you’re free to do whatever, just make sure nighttime meds are ready, the dishes are done, and the doors are locked
o       Don’t mix powder meds with liquid meds until right before use
·        Important: after the CNA leaves, when you turn off lights and lock doors, always check on Don. Sometimes he needs adjustment and/or mouth suction
·        Set an alarm for 3 am, keep Don’s door open, and your door cracked so you can hear anything important

·        You don’t have to wake up at 3 am if he rings after 1am
