OVERNIGHT TRAINING- How to apply the Condom Catheter

  1. I recommend that you not use gloves during this procedure. The sticky glue gets stuck to the gloves making it impossible to roll condom on. 
  2. Get a baby wipe from bathroom. Get a tissue. 
  3. Wipe my shaft by pulling up my head of penis. 
  4. Dry shaft with tissue. 
  5. Open the condom package by the middle down the perforation line not at the top. 
  6. Check the condom to make sure it is rolled properly.

  7. Bend my left knee into the butterfly position. 
  8. Get a (Allkare) sticky wipe and apply it to me while pulling up, but only to the shaft. Wipe your fingers to get rid of sticky stuff. 
  9. Pull penis and wave with hand on the glue for a few seconds to dry.  
  10. Take the condom out and start rolling it down on me.  And stop when you get past the head. 
  11. The next step is critical if you get it wrong, my condom will definitely come off. If you didn't follow the next step, my condom will fall off either during a transfer or you forgot to take the bag off my wheelchair. 
  12. Pull my penis so you can pull my foreskin down with your other hand.  This will prevent me from losing my condom. 
  13. Continue rolling it down all the way.  Important , be careful not to roll condom into my scrotum. Ouch! 
  14. Squeeze the condom to release any air bubbles.  
  15. Get alcohol wipe and wipe the urine bag tube and the end of the condom. 
The next step will tell you how to attach the condom to the urine bag tube in WC:  
  1. First put urine bag in wheelchair side bag and put excess tube in bag so it doesn't get caught on my van door. 
  2. Tie the double overhead knot to the tube.  Leave about 2-4 inches from the knot to the blue button. 
  3. Get an alcohol wipe. 
  4. Wipe the bag tube opening and the tip of the condom. 
  5. Attach the condom to the tube. 
  6. Make sure there is no twist in the condom. 
  7. The trick is to get the blue tag on the tube so that it’s not sticking me in the leg.  
  8. When you get me into my wheelchair place two tissues between my leg and the blue tag.  
  9. Position condom so it is straight.

DRT  I would like to start by saying that I’m glad that I made the decision to continue to fight this horrible disease by getting a trach. A few of my friends (PALS-People with ALS) when confronted with the inability to breathe, decide to hang it up. I choose to LIVE! WATER MANAGEMENT Every time you come, do water management on both vent tube at 11 AM and 7 PM. The key points are: Empty both tubes of excess water. Always empty water AWAY from me, NOT into me. Remove clear tube from PEEP valve and drain water into wash cloth. NEVER allow the PEEP valve to get wet.  Separate the white tube from the peep valve. Don’t twist the peep valve. Hold the white tube in two places, up by my belly and down by the peep  valve.  Pull hard on the white tube while holding the other end that will empty the water out. OVERNIGHT TRAINING- Vest

DRT  How to put the vest on in the morning:  I prefer that you don't lower the vent arm.  Put my feet on the box.  Pull the vest machine out of the closet.  Take the finger foam and vest out. Don't put them on yet.  Take off my peg tube, metal clip and rice pad.   Important , put the paper towel on my right shoulder on the roll pillow so it doesn't get lost behind my back.  Put my feet on box because when you pull vest down, I always shimmy down.  Important, the next few steps can be done on either side of the bed depending on how strong your upper arms - if you can pull down the vest.  Put the vest behind my neck. Do not lift my head!  Pickup my right hand first to put white tubes under my arm pit. Do the same with my left hand from the window side of bed (if you choose to do all from that side of the bed).   Grab the bottom of both sides of the vest. Read Before 1st Training- How to Transfer and Wheelchair Comfort

DRT   How to Transfer  WHEELCHAIR Hints: Wheelchair should have 4” ROHO cushion. Plus a blue or green chux to protect ROHO if I leak. I have weak stomach muscles, so be sure my arms are always on the arm rests to prevent me from falling forward. It is very painful on my PEG tube when I’m leaning forward unsupported. It's very important to turn the front WC wheels before transfer so you can move the WC with ease.  BED to WHEELCHAIR or SHOWER CHAIR - for my CNA Use the PIVOT DISK for transfer to and from bed. Always transfer me with my shoes or slippers on. With shoe straps behind my ankles. That way I won’t slip off the disk.  If I am shaking help me to put my heels on the disk, that way I am not on the balls of my feet. Push your hands on my knees to make it stop. When you lift me, don’t give me a bear hug, it hurts my PEG tube. Lift me using my rib cage with your arms on my back or under my armpits.
