2nd TRAINING- Emergency Procedures

DRT
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
IF VENTILATOR STOPS WORKING and the vent alarm won't quit:
·      Look at the vent alarm. Read it to Don.
·      If the alarm is this:
·      Try to fix the vent - start looking at my trach and continue down the tubes searching.  It might be the blue tube popped off.
·      Look at the yellow tube up by my trach for moisture. If you see it unscrew the yellow tube at the vent. Blow hard to clear the moisture. Keep blowing quick bursts until clear.
·      If vent still not working, get Don on 2nd vent.
·      If 2nd vent not an option due to time it takes to get vent from living room, grab Ambu bag and help him breathe.
o    Take off the trach below the accordion and attach the Ambu bag as shown below:
o    Squeeze bag half way then let go.
o    Repeat every 3 to 5 seconds.
o    Ask Don if speed is OK. Keep watching Don.
·         After a few minutes, retry the “broken” vent. If still not working, breathe for Don for another minute then quickly get the 2nd vent.
·         IF on Ambu Bag- Once he is out of distress, ask Don if you should call 911 for help.

IF HOME POWER GOES OUT:
Remember both vents have 45 minutes of battery power.
The lithium has 5 hours of power.
There is an automatic power system in the garage.
Don't panic!

IF DARK: (power in Don's bedroom should still be working because of batteries)
Turn on RED battery-powered light on Don’s wall.
Put head lamp with head strap on your forehead.
Is Don Breathing OK?
No: See above “IF VENT STOPS WORKING.”
Yes: Stop LOST POWER alarm and push RESET button.
Set a 40 minute timer.
Is power out for whole house? (Parts of the house will always work because of power system in garage)
No: Check breakers in garage.
Yes: Is power out in whole neighborhood?
No: Check master breaker outside on southeast corner of house.
Yes: Call 221-6700 to report power outage for a person on life support system. Use land line, not cell phone.

BACK-UP POWER SYSTEM
Battery power system in the garage should automatically turn on when house power is lost. The system will only provide power to Don's bedroom, living room, garage freezer, and outlet in garage for crock pot. There will be NO POWER to the bathroom, AC, hot water heater, house heaters, or anything in the kitchen!!!

NEXT: POWER MANAGEMENT (for outage over 8 hours)
·         Get 8 hour battery and cord from garage (picture below) for vent.
·         Hook the cable to the vent as shown below:

EXTERNAL POWER light turns green (on vent)

For this long of an outage, there is nothing further we can do. The blue batteries in the garage will eventually run out so that is why Don's vent should be on the black portable 8-hour battery. For an outage this long, emergency services should eventually be coming to get Don to take him to the hospital.
